There is something wonderfully defiant about a dahlia. Just as the garden begins showing all the familiar signs of Autumn, dahlias continue to bloom. They grow larger and more extravagant, carrying their colour through shortening days until the first frost finally brings the season to its close.

Perhaps that is why this flower feels so perfectly named Harvest Moon.

At 5.5 inches across, she has the generous scale of the dahlias we know from the garden. Layer upon layer of ceramic petals open outward from a tightly gathered centre, creating the extraordinary fullness that makes the real flower so irresistible to look at and, in our case, photograph.

Her glaze is quieter than the flower's form. Warm oatmeal settles across the petals while the glaze pulls away along their edges, revealing an earthy brown that traces the architecture of the bloom. From above, every layer becomes visible. From the side, her low, spreading form feels almost as though a freshly cut dahlia has simply been placed upon the table.

She is substantial without being showy. Abundant without needing brilliant colour.

And perhaps that is what we love most about dahlias.
