There are hosts who make you feel welcome. And then there is Frankie.

Standing remarkably upright in his spectacles, jacket, striped trousers and boots, Frankie appears entirely prepared for company. His magnificent antlers give him unmistakable woodland presence, while the little pipe held thoughtfully at his mouth suggests this is a stag accustomed to taking his hosting responsibilities rather seriously.

And then there is the bowl. Held carefully between his hands as though he has been waiting for precisely this moment. A candy? Perhaps. A chocolate? Certainly. A handful of something gathered from the garden? We suspect Frankie would approve.

Frankie belongs to Canadian artist and author Jessica Hiemstra's Eric + Eloise storybook world, an ever-growing woodland Framily inspired by friendship, nature, imagination and Jessica's childhood among the forests of Canada.

We invited this wonderfully eccentric gentleman into Meadows & Muse because he transforms something as ordinary as offering a small treat into a tiny moment of theatre.

Fill his bowl with wrapped sweets when guests arrive. Let him hold acorns, seed pods or preserved flower heads gathered from the Meadow. Change his offering with the seasons—or leave the bowl empty and allow Frankie himself to be the conversation piece.

After all, it isn't really what Frankie is offering that makes us smile.

It's the extraordinary formality with which he offers it.
