Before there was an entire woodland Framily, there were two unlikely friends. A hare named Eric. And a fox named Eloise.

Their friendship became the beginning of Canadian artist and author Jessica Hiemstra’s Eric + Eloise storybook world, inspired by Scandinavian folktales, Jessica’s childhood among the forests of Canada, and her affection for the animals who inhabit them.

And Eric is certainly difficult to forget.

With extraordinarily tall ears, a magnificent handlebar moustache and a monocle suspended from its delicate chain, he possesses all the eccentric dignity of a gentleman who seems to have wandered out of another time—and perhaps another story altogether.

As a wall mount, Eric’s character becomes wonderfully larger than life. His elongated silhouette makes a striking sculptural statement while the warm antique-gold finish and beautifully rendered details give him the feeling of an old curiosity discovered rather than something newly acquired.

We welcomed Eric into Meadows & Muse because beneath all that splendid eccentricity lies something rather lovely.

His story began with friendship where friendship might not have been expected. And perhaps there is a small reminder in that for all of us—to remain curious about the characters who happen to cross our path.

Although admittedly, very few of them will arrive wearing a monocle.
