WHERE BEAUTY MEETS MEANING

There is something about Louie that makes us suspect he has read considerably more books than we have. Perhaps it's the spectacles. Or the bow tie. Or simply the wonderfully earnest expression of a little woodland mouse who appears to have somewhere important to be.

Louie comes from the imagined forest of Canadian artist and author Jessica Hiemstra's Eric + Eloise stories—a world inspired by friendship, nature and the animals of the forest. He is also one of the friends who gathers with Eric, Eloise and Frankie in While the Forest is Sleeping, when the woodland family comes together to welcome Beatrice's new cubs and ring in a new year.

That seems rather fitting for Louie. Small though he may be, he belongs among the gathering. Rendered in cast aluminum with an antique-gold finish, his beautifully detailed face, oversized ears, spectacles and neatly tied bow give him just enough dignity to balance his inherent whimsy. Jessica herself suggests a library or book nook as a natural home for him—which seems exactly right.

We invited Louie into Meadows & Muse because he embodies something we never want the Meadow to lose: the permission to be curious, a little unexpected, and occasionally delighted by something simply because it makes us smile.

After all, not everything we bring home needs to be terribly serious. Although Louie may disagree.
