Some colours are difficult to name because they seem to belong more to a moment than to a palette. Blue Hour is one of them.

It arrives as daylight begins to withdraw, when the sky cools toward blue but the last traces of warmth have not entirely disappeared. For a little while, the two exist together. That was what we saw in this rose.

At first, the glaze appears a beautifully softened blue-grey, settling into the folds of its layered petals and giving the flower an almost weathered quality. But look more closely and something warmer begins to appear. Where the glaze pulls away from the edges, delicate traces of coral emerge, outlining the flower as though the last light of the day has caught there.

And beneath that remarkable glaze is a form we immediately recognized and loved.

The petals gather tightly at the centre before gradually opening outward in the wonderfully layered manner of an English rose. Nothing futuristic. Nothing imagined beyond recognition. Simply a familiar garden flower interpreted beautifully in ceramic.
