There is something wonderfully familiar about Beatrice.

Her rounded body and four substantial handles recall vessels that have been carried, filled and lived with for generations, while her glossy white finish gives that old-world silhouette a fresh simplicity.

We found Beatrice while preparing The Turning, our Autumn Studio Capsule.

Perhaps that is why we immediately imagined her filled not only with flowers, but with all the other things the garden begins to offer as Summer loosens its hold.

Grasses fading toward wheat. Hydrangeas settling into dusty, weathered shades. Seed heads appearing where flowers once stood. A beautifully irregular branch brought inside simply because something about it asked to be noticed.

Against those changing textures, Beatrice's quiet white form felt just right.

At approximately 7½ inches wide and 6 inches high, she is low and generous rather than tall and formal, allowing botanicals to spread, wander and move beyond her silhouette. Her four handles remain visible between stems, giving even the simplest arrangement a wonderfully sculptural quality.

And although we first met Beatrice in Autumn, she was never intended for only one season.

She can hold the first green branches of Spring, garden flowers in Summer, gathered grasses and seed heads in Autumn, and evergreens or bare branches when Winter arrives.

Because a good vase does not belong to a season.

It waits to see what the garden will bring next.
