There are flowers we know because we have grown them. And then there are flowers we admire from gardens different from our own. The ones that make us imagine creating an entirely new corner of the garden simply for the pleasure of seeing them there.

For us, the water lily is one of those flowers.

There is something almost unbelievable about encountering one on a pond. Surrounded by the looseness and irregularity of the natural world, the flower itself can appear astonishingly composed. Petals unfold around a precise centre. The bloom rests almost weightlessly above the water. From a distance, it can look so perfect that you wonder for a moment whether it could possibly be real.

That was what made this ceramic interpretation so compelling.

At 5.8 inches across and 2.8 inches deep, Aurora is one of the more substantial blooms in The Ceramic Garden, giving its long, beautifully modelled petals room to open outward just as they would on the water.

Then there is the glaze. A soft robin's-egg blue washes across the flower, becoming deeper where petals overlap and allowing their sculptural form to emerge. Along the raised edges, the glaze gives way to the palest yellow, as though light has found the flower and settled there.

It seems particularly fitting for a water lily. Because perhaps what makes these flowers so captivating isn't that they look perfectly made.

It's realizing that nature made them that way.

Perhaps nature was a sculptor long before we were.
